World War I Centennial: Heaven, Hell or Hoboken

The Hoboken Historical Museum opens a new exhibit that focuses on how the city and its residents were transformed after the United States entered World War I. "World War I Centennial: Heaven, Hell or Hoboken," which runs through December 23, will feature silent films of soldiers at the Hoboken port. It will also show government posters meant to promote the local draft registration and urge people at home to buy war bonds, conserve resources and help with the war effort.
During that time, Hoboken became the main port for the U.S. Expeditionary Forces headed to Europe.
In addition, personal photographs, letters, uniforms and commemorative items will also be on display to show how the people of Hoboken were connected to the war. Some of those featured include Mrs. Frank R. Markey, who worked with the Red Cross assisting soldiers, and Peter G. Spinetto, who sent postcards from France to his family in Hoboken.
There will also be a 10-part lecture and tour series taking place during the exhibition's run. This series will start August 27, 2017 at 4 p.m., with a program titled "From Here to Over There: The WWI Legacy of Fort Dix, NJ."
The Hoboken Historical Museum is open Tuesdays to Thursdays from 2 to 7 p.m.; Fridays from 1 to 5 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.; free opening reception Sunday, August 6, 2017 from 2 to 5 p.m.
