On Saturday, November 11 the Library of Congress will host a special series of programs in honor of Veterans Day. Participate in an exhibition tour, explore our hands-on cart, hear from an exhibition curator, or view theatrical presentations based on Library of Congress collections and other personal accounts from service personnel in World War I and beyond. Program Schedule:

10:00 a.m.

• Public Tour: Echoes of the Great War: American Experiences of World War I
• View highlights of the exhibition and discover arguments about America’s involvement in World War I, experiences of the war “over here” and “over there,” and the world the war created in this 30-minute tour.
• Location: Begins at the exhibition entrance, second floor, Thomas Jefferson Building

11:00 a.m.

• An American Soldier’s Journey Home: The Diary of Irving Greenwald
• This powerful one-man show follows the journey of soldier Irving Greenwald in World War I from training to the trenches and home again to his beloved wife and daughter. The presentation, developed by actor Douglas Taurel, draws directly from Greenwald’s diary, held in the collections of the Veterans History Project and currently on display in the exhibition Echoes of the Great War: American Experiences of World War I at the Library of Congress. Free tickets are available via Eventbrite External, but are not required. This program is appropriate for family audiences.

• Gallery Talk: Coming Home – Veterans Return from World War I
• Echoes of the Great War exhibition co-curator Ryan Reft will discuss the challenges faced by WWI veterans and the ways in which their activism drove social change in the decades following the First World War.
• Location: Echoes of the Great War exhibition, second floor, Thomas Jefferson Building

2:00 p.m.

• Public Tour: Echoes of the Great War: American Experiences of World War I
• View highlights of the exhibition Echoes of the Great War and discover arguments about America’s involvement in World War I, experiences of the war “over here” and “over there,” and the world the war created in this 30-minute tour.

The American Soldier 2:00-3:00 p.m.

• The American Soldier - A one-man dramatic production that reveals the struggles American soldiers face at war and explores the bravery and the difficulties our veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and their families face when they try to re-enter civilian life. The show is based on letters from soldiers from the American Revolution through current conflicts. It was nominated for an Amnesty International Award and has been performed at The Kennedy Center and Off Broadway. Free tickets are available via Eventbrite External link, but are not required. Due to adult language and content, this program is recommended for ages 13+.

Veterans' Oral History Workshop 2:00-4:00 p.m.

• This two-hour workshop and professional development opportunity will train attendees in oral history methods through hands-on exercises, contextual examples, and best practices accordant with Library of Congress standards. The session is led by staff of the Library of Congress Veterans History Project. While it is centered on the narratives of veterans, anyone interested in learning — and applying — community oral history techniques is encouraged to attend. Space is limited; free tickets are available via Eventbrite.
• Location: Humanities and Social Sciences Training Room, LJ139 B – First Floor, Thomas Jefferson Building

3:00 pm

• Public Tour: Echoes of the Great War: American Experiences of World War I

Between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm:

• Visit the Young Readers Center on the ground floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building for a letter-writing activity to active duty service personnel 
• Examine objects a World War I soldier needed on the front in our hands-on cart on the mezzanine of the Thomas Jefferson Building, second floor
