About The Event
The Hicksville World War I Centennial Ceremony will take place in our town's beautiful monument area, to which we are adding another granite marker at the ceremony. During the war, Hicksville had three young men die on the same day. The ceremony will last from 1:00pm to 2:00pm and feature various speakers, including Mitch Yockelson.
Speaker Mitchell "Mitch" A. Yockelson is a military historian and archivist. The author of four books, most recently Forty-Seven Days: How Pershing’s Warriors Came of Age to Defeat the German Army during World I. Yockelson is Historian for the United States World War One Centennial Commission and will talk about the forty-seven day Meuse-Argonne battle that involved more than 1.2 million American troops, including veterans from Hicksville.
Event will take place at the Veteran’s Memorial, Corner of North Bryan Street and West Arthur Street. The Edward C. Smart post plans to hold a dinner at 5:00 p.m. after the ceremony.
