Bells of Peace, a WWI remembrance

Sunday, November 11, 2018, 10:30am - 11:00am

About The Event

Bells of Peace, a WWI remembrance

World War I ended with the cessation of hostilities on November 11, 1918 at 11 a.m. – the famed eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. To mark the 100th anniversary of that event, the Eastern Cabarrus Historical Society in Mt. Pleasant will participate in Bells of Peace.

At 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, bells across the nation will ring to commemorate the armistice. The bell in front of the museum, the former Mt. Pleasant Collegiate Institute, will toll 21 times in honor of those who served in The Great War.

Four and a half million Americans served in WWI; 375,000 were wounded. Among the 116,516 Americans killed, 41 were from Cabarrus County.

The public, especially veterans, is welcome for this free event. Patrons will begin assembling for the bell ringing at 10:30 a.m. in front of the College Street entrance to the Eastern Cabarrus Historical Society museum.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation represented by the Cabarrus Quilters Guild will honor select local veterans with a Quilt of Valor. Quilts of Valor are handmade quilts made by local quilting guilds and presented to service members touched by war. The quilts represent comfort, healing and love.
