Laying the Foundation for the US Air Force: The First Aero Squadron on the Mexican Border, 1916

Friday, February 09, 2018, 11:30am

About The Event

A lecture by Roger Miller, author of “A Preliminary to War”, The 1st Aero Squadron and the Mexican Punitive Expedition of 1916.

Friday, 9 February 2018, 11:30 am

Ft. Snelling History Center Auditorium

The 1st Aero Squadron was formed in Texas in March 1913 in anticipation of trouble along the US/Mexico border. The Squadron had two companies, with a total of 6 officers, 52 EM, and 9 Aircraft. By the summer of 1913 with no hostilities along the border and with poor living and flying conditions in Texas, the unit was moved to San Diego.

In March 1916 the unit redeployed to support General Pershing’s operations along the border. Initially, with only eight aircraft and a severe shortage of spare parts, the unit worked to overcome seemingly impossible difficulties and lay the foundation of what would become first, the Army Air Corps and later the US Air Force.
