Of all the French combat soldiers who sketchedthe First World War, Despujols was the most decorated having been awarded theLegion of Honor (France'shighest civilian and military decoration), the Croix de Guerre with quiteremarkably six bronze stars and the Medaille Militaire. He participated invirtually all the major battles for four years. He started out as a machinegunner and ended with a tank regiment. He rose in battle from private to secondlieutenant.
