SUMMARY:1917: How One Year Changed the World
LOCATION:315
DESCRIPTION:"1917: How One Year Changed the World," co-organized by the National Museum
of American Jewish History (NMAJH) in Philadelphia and the American Jewish
Historical Society (AJHS) in New York, will look back 100 years to explore
how the dramatic events of a single year brought about fundamental changes
in American politics and culture that reverberated throughout the world an
d still impact us today.\n"1917" is the first exhibition to demonstrate how
three key events of that year — America's entry into World War I, the Bols
hevik Revolution, and the signing of the Balfour Declaration, in which Grea
t Britain indicated support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine — brought ab
out political, cultural, and social changes that dramatically reshaped the
United States' role in the world and directly affected everyday Americans.\
nThrough approximately 130 original artifacts — including a decoded copy of
the Zimmerman Telegram, an original draft copy of the Balfour Declaration,
Justice Louis Brandeis' judicial robes, a bust of Bolshevik Revolution lea
der Vladimir Lenin, never-before-exhibited possessions of recent Medal of H
onor recipient William Shemin, and much more — 1917 will take visitors on a
journey into the trenches of WWI, revolutionary Russia, and debates over t
he future of Britain's colonial empire in the Middle East.\nThe exhibition
will be on view at NMAJH from March 17 - July 16, 2017, and then will be on
view at AJHS from September 1 - December 29, 2017.\n"1917: How One Year Ch
anged the World" has been made possible in part by a major grant from the N
ational Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor. Major s
upport provided by David Berg Foundation, Tawani Foundation, and an anonymo
us donor. Additional support provided by Linda and Michael Jesselson, and B
ryna and Joshua Landes.\nThe museum is closed on Mondays.\n
