DESCRIPTION:On Saturday November 3 at 2pm  Elizabeth Clemens, the author of Detroit in 
 World War 1 (Arcadia Publishing, 2015 ) will be the museum's speaker, offer
 ing a visual presentation of Detroit's role in the war, its industrial cont
 ributions and the effect of the war on the Detroit home front. Clemens is t
 he audiovisual archivist at the Walter Reuther Library, Archives of Labor a
 nd Union Affairs at Wayne State University. She has authored a second book 
 of Detroit history , The Works Progress Administration in Detroit.\nAt the 
 same program, Lincoln Park Mayor Tom Kames will read excerpts from the war 
 diary kept by his grandfather, Walter P.Gaffigan of Detroit. Private Gaffig
 an's journal covers six months from the time of his enlistment in April of 
 1918, his deployment to France in June and serving on the Western Front wit
 h G Company, of the 112th Ammunition Train of the 37th Division. The 37th w
 as involved in the fighting at the Meuse-Argonne (the largest battle in the
  history of the U.S. Army) and and the Ypres-Lys Offensives against the Ger
 man Army, just prior to the November's Armistice.\nOther family members of 
 men who served in the First World War will also be in attendance. The Histo
 rical Society extends a special invitation to those who had ancestors\nwho 
 served in The Great War. Admission to the event is free (donations are acce
 pted) and is open to the general public.\nLight refreshments will be served
