 lies the largest shipwreck fleet in the Western Hemisphere, a haunting lega
 cy of WWI. In April 1917, President Woodrow Wilson approved the greatest sh
 ipbuilding program in history: an order for 1,000 ships to make up the shor
 tage of transport vessels needed for the war effort. The war ended before a
 ny ships were put into service and hundreds were simply scrapped in the Bay
 . This exhibit will explore the history of this “Ghost Fleet,” tell the sto
 ries behind a scandalous wartime boondoggle and highlight the rich archaeol
 ogical and ecological treasure it has become today.\n
