rgh WWI Series event in collaboration with Heinz Memorial Chapel and Duques
ne University.
This event will
respectfully commemorate those who gave their lives in World War I, while c
elebrating the freedom that we cherish thanks to the fallen and those who s
urvived. Virtually every family in Britain and many in the USA were affecte
d by the loss of a relative or friend who fought in this war to preserve ou
r freedom.
We will sing their songs,
learn about local World War I heroes, and be uplifted by some rousing music
of the time. One hundred years after World War I ended, we celebrate the e
nd of the the war and thank those men, women and animals who took part in i
t. Over 16 million humans, 9 million horses and one million other animals o
f whom made the ultimate sacrifice.

orn out of WWI was the 'special relationship' and friendship between the Un
ited States and Great Britain. We hope that through this Britsburgh WWI ser
ies of events that we highlights, emphasize and continue this special relat
ionship on into the future.

WILL REMEMBER THEM will feature readings, music and poetry from the Great W
ar, including Laurence Binyon’s poignant “For the Fallen,” and John McCrae’
s “In Flanders Fields.”
The audience
will learn about local Pittsburgh World War I heroes from Duquesne Universi
ty’s Kimberly Szczypinski.
Soprano Je
nnifer Russell will sing a selection of the most memorable popular songs of
World War I, including “Roses of Picardy” and “Till We Meet Again.”
What’s more, the audience will join in sing
ing the American and British national anthems and some of the best-loved so
ngs of the war-tunes that raised the spirits in the dank trenches of the We
stern Front.
Organist John Tyillian w
ill pull out all the stops on the great organ of Heinz Chapel to perform th
e rousing music of composers like Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan-Williams,
both of whom served in World War I.

he haunting sound of bagpipes played by Emily Trimpey will take us ‘over th
e top,’ as we remember and pay tribute to those who served.
