SUMMARY:World War I and the Maine Experience
LOCATION:338
DESCRIPTION: (https://www.mainehistory.org/museum_current.shtml#current)\nKnown as "The
War to End All Wars", World War I ended nothing. 2017 marks the 100th Anni
versary of American involvement in the first World War, and an opportunity
to reflect on the tremendous impact it continues to have on American politi
cs, society and culture. Our exhibition, World War I and the Maine Experien
ce places emphasis on Maine's attitude towards the conflict, the cultural r
hetoric of the period, and the service and sacrifice of Maine citizens on t
he front and at home.\nIt also explores the role the media played in public
opinion, and highlights how Maine's economy, population, and development r
eflected and reacted to the global issues at hand. Through exhibited object
s including posters, pamphlets, and political cartoons, the exhibition depi
cts a nation rallying together to support its allies and "preserve liberty.
" Also on view are uniforms and period clothing, military documents, and we
aponry including a ca. 1895 Colt-Browning machine gun, as well as a rich co
llection of photographs and letters demonstrating the veteran experience, t
he complexities of reintegration, and the comradery of service.\n\nThis exh
ibition is made possible by the Morton-Kelly Charitable Trust and the Marga
 ret Burnham Charitable Trust.\n
