SUMMARY:Remembering the Great War: 1914-1918
LOCATION:898
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit features artifacts ranging from patriotic posters to a U.S. Arm
y captain’s uniform from the balloon corps\nto helmets to a silent film of
American troops in France.\nThe centerpiece is the photographs, which are b
oth a treasure and a bit of a mystery.\nMuseum curators know who took the p
hotos, where they were taken and information about each\nimage. Curators al
so know how the photos ended up in the museum’s collection – they were part
\nof a larger collection acquired from Carson City history buff and collect
or Daun Bohall, who had\npurchased them years earlier at a yard sale. How t
he photos went from France to a Carson City\nyard sale is the mystery.\nThe
photographs were all taken by the Photographic Section of the French Army.
It was created\nin 1915 to counter German action against neutral countries
while supporting the services of the\nMinistry of Foreign Affairs. The pho
tographic section of the army hired photographers to go out\nand document t
he war.\nMany of the photos also came with information on the back, but tha
t, too, offered a challenge as\nthe writing was in French. Museum officials
were able to find a volunteer who translated it to\nhelp with writing the
captions for each image.\nThousands of Nevadans volunteered or were drafted
into military service during World War I,\nmany of them serving in the Arm
y’s 91 st Division, also known as the “Wild West Division.”\nThere were 116
,798 Americans who died in the war, including 197 from Nevada.\nThe state’s
namesake and storied battleship – the USS Nevada – was launched during Wor
ld\nWar I, and while it did not see battle, it was part of the fleet that e
scorted President Woodrow\nWilson to France for the signing of the treaty t
hat ended the war. Museum visitors can also see\nthe USS Nevada collection.
 \nMuseum hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission
is $8 for adults\nand free for children 17 and younger.\n
