About The Event

Join the Indiana World War I Centennial Committee, State of Indiana and the Salvation Army Indiana Division in celebrating and honoring Hoosier WWI hero Ensign Helen Purviance.

So much more than the woman who cooked the first batch of Salvation Army doughnuts in France, Ensign Purviance was a woman of humble beginnings who did not shy away from the call to service nor the danger that accompanied it. She was among the first eleven salvationists to go to France and among the first four to head to the front lines, demonstrating her fierce determination, unwavering in the face of warfare. Through her own resourcefulness and ingenuity, she was able to make the first doughnuts to support those who were fighting for their country, giving them some measure of peace and comfort amidst the turmoil of life in the trenches of the First World War.

The community is invited to attend a commemoration honoring Ensign Purviance on Saturday, April 14, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Huntington County Courthouse in downtown Huntington.

Event Details:

  • This event is receiving support from local entities like the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce, Huntington College, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the VFW, the City of Huntington, and the Huntington City-Township Public Library.

  • Festivities are in downtown Huntington at the County Courthouse and on the courthouse square.

  • Festivities begin at 11:00 AM and wrap up at 2:00 PM. The public is welcome to attend. There is no cost and the event is family-friendly.

  • A Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services mobile kitchen (canteen) will be on site. Local members of the DAR will be cooking authentic WWI-era donuts on site.

  • Huntington College students will be dressed as WWI-era Salvation Army Donut Girls and distributing the free donuts.

  • The local VFW is providing a tent that will be erected on the courthouse lawn and will contain a display about Salvation Army Donut Girls.

  • The Mayor of Huntington and other local and state officials will take part in a ceremony honoring Helen Purviance in the rotunda of the courthouse.

  • An exhibit of artifacts telling the story of Helen Purviance and the Donut Girls will be on display at the local library during the event and will remain in place for an undetermined amount of time.
