Harry Richard Pool

Harry Richard Pool born around 1894. Harry Pool served in World War 1 with the United States Army. The enlistment was in 1917 and the service was completed in 1919.

Story of Service

After his graduation from East High School In Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1911, Harry attended the University of Minnesota for baccalaureate studies. While at the "U of M", Harry became interested in Law and later attended University of Minnesota Law School. Harry's law school career was interrupted, however, by his service in the US Army during World War I.

He was hospitalized at City Hospital at the time of his registration, with diphtheria. He was a US Army field clerk and held no rank in the U.S. Army.

He left New York on July 17, 1917 and arrived back in New York on July 17, 1919. He served under General Pershing at the AEF headquarters in Paris France and under another general in Tours France beginning in January 7, 1918. He also visited Belgium and saw cities such as Brussels. He earned the Purple Heart and other decorations which are listed in a memorandum.

Edward Thomas Anglim

Edward Thomas Anglim born around 1890. Edward Anglim served in World War 1 with the United States Army. The enlistment was in 1917 and the service was completed in 1918.

Story of Service

Edward Anglim (1890-1976) was born in Ballykenny Ireland and immigrated to the United States in 1907.

He registered for military service soon after the United States entered World War I in April 1917. At the time, he lived at 916 Jones (Road) in Sioux City, Iowa. Edward was single at the time and worked as a cashier with Cudahy Packing Company, the largest employer in Sioux City at the time.

Prior to living on Jones Road, he roomed at 1011 13th in Sioux City. Even though he was married in January 1918, enlisted in the US Army, at the age of 28, on May 8, 1918 in Sioux City Iowa.

He was first sent Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis and served the duration of the war at Camp Grant, Illinois. He was discharged from the military on November 30, 1918 as a private in the US Army Infantry. While he was in the army, his wife Agnes lived with her father, at 1001-8th in Sioux City.

After Edward was discharged from the army, he became a charter member of the David Wisted-Zenith City American Legion Post in Duluth, MN.

William Hoyt Hyatt

Story of Service

My uncle, William Hoyt Hyatt, was a Private in the U.S. Army during World War I.

He was born in Centralhatchee, Georgia on December 15th, 1895 and passed away on October 23rd, 1958.

He was married to Sally Hyatt and they had one son, Glenn Hyatt. They are all buried in the Centralhatchee Baptist Church Cemetery in Heard County, Georgia.

William Jesse Strickland

Story of Service

William Jesse Strickland and his brother, Larry Young Strickland, sent many letters to their sister during the war. The letters are now in the Heard County Historical Museum in Franklin, Georgia, and were donated by their great-niece, Selmah Bowen.

Larry and his brother, William Strickland were the great uncles of Selmah Bowen. She has copies of letters that both men sent to their sister.

Clarence M Gilchrist born around 1895. Clarence Gilchrist served in World War 1 with the United States Navy. The enlistment was in 1917 and the service was completed in 1917.

Story of Service

Clarence Gilchrist served in the U.S. Navy during WWI. His granddaughter, Bonnie Gilchrist Baker, provided photographs and notes on the back of the photographs. Clarence served in the Navy Band for a while; he visited in Guantanamo, Cuba in 1918.

Story of Service

My father, Hilra Herman Hyatt, was a Wagoner Sup. Co. 26th Infantry in World War I. He was inducted in the U.S. Army at Camp Gordon on October 2nd, 1917 and discharged at Camp Gordon on September 25th, 1919.

After my father was discharged from the Army, he married my mother, Carrie Eunice Adele Gladney Hyatt. They lived in Centralhatchee, Georgia, and twelve children were born from this union.

My father was born and reared in Heard County, Georgia. His birthdate is October 28th, 1893, and his death date is February 27th, 1958.

Juan P Quintera Jr

Juan P. Quintana, Jr. was born around 1899. Juan Quintana served in World War 1 with the United States Army. The enlistment was in 1917 and the service was completed in 1934.

Story of Service

Juan Quintana, Camp Mills, Long Island, New York 05/17/1919, enlisted on June 27, 1917 and was sent to Fort Logan, Colorado and Camp Kearney, California for his basic training.

Juan was not a citizen but he became one June 2, 1924 when Congress authorized the Secretary of Interior to issue certificates of citizenship to Indians.

My father, Juan Phone Quintana was born on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation, August 24, 1899. He spent his first 16 years on the reservation helping his parents with the sheep. At the age of 9 he was finally caught by the Indian Agent and sent to school. He said his mother did not want the agent to find her children so she hid them.

William B. Wilson

William B. Wilson was born around 1893. William Wilson served in World War 1 with the United States Army. The enlistment was in 1916 and the service was completed in 1918.

Story of Service

Beacon’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 666 commemorates the 100th anniversary of the death of the solider who is the eponym of that organization -- Private William B. Wilson. He was killed in action in Belgium on August 19, 1918, the first soldier from Beacon to die in World War I.

Today, a century after his death on the battlefield, few know of him or the reason why the Wilson Post was so named. History can be fickle and easily forgotten after a generation or two, but Private Wilson’s story of sacrifice needs to be retold and remembered.

Wilson went off to war with two of his best friends, George Van Pelt of Beacon and Herbert Miller of Newburgh. The three, with about 50 other Beacon boys, joined up in Newburgh’s “Company L” of the 107 Infantry Regiment. By late April of 1918, the regiment had landed in France.

About James E. Coffey

James Edward Coffey, the first soldier from Nashua, NH to die in battle in World War I, was born on April 22, 1896, to Daniel J. and Catherine (Dillon) Coffey.

He attended Nashua schools and St. Patrick Church, and in June 1917, became one of the first Nashua men to enlist in the Army at the outbreak of the war. He was assigned to Company D, 103rd Infantry, 26th Division, and trained in Concord and Westfield, Mass.

Coffey and his unit, the famous 26th Yankee Division commanded by Maj. Gen. Clarence R. Edwards, deployed overseas in September 1917.
