Independence Seaport Museum USS Olympia

This week the Commission’s Executive Director Dan Dayton met with Mike Flynn of the Independence Seaport Museum, which is home to USS Olympia. Launched in 1892, the cruiser Olympia (C-6) is the oldest steel warship afloat in the world. She fought in the Spanish American War in 1898. During WWI, the Olympia served with anti-submarine escort convoys protecting shipping in the Atlantic from German U-boat attacks. Later, she was sent to Murmansk to engage the Bolsheviks in the newly formed USSR.

Following WWI- Olympia was the most significant commissioned US warship capable of making the journey, the Olympia was selected for the honor of bringing the Unknown Soldier home for interment in the United States. We are happy to form this relationship with the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia, and we will work together with the Museum and the Pennsylvania WWI Centennial Committee to help tell the story of Olympia.

Army-Navy Game this Weekend- Saturday, Dec 12
Mike Williams, one of our fall social media interns, wrote a thoughtful piece for our website about the history of the Army-Navy game and rivalry. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

“When Army meets Navy on the gridiron this weekend, the two teams will be participating in one of the longest and most prestigious rivalries in American sports. The teams will face off before an American public worried about events in Europe; worried about committing forces into a long and costly war; worried about subversive agents, both domestic and international. The atmosphere in which Saturday’s game will be played echoes that of another Army-Navy Game, played exactly one hundred years ago….”

Upcoming Events:

WWI Museum Exhibit

Rearranging History- opening Dec 15
The exhibit Rearranging History: Daniel MacMorris and the Panthéon de la Guerre addresses the question: What happened to the world's largest painting? At 402 feet in circumference and 45 feet in height, the painting was the most ambitious artistic undertaking during World War I and was the largest painting in the world in 1918. A Kansas City artist, MacMorris helped the Museum acquire the Panthéon de la Guerre in 1956. He then cut and pasted sections from the huge canvas, rearranged them, painted in new individuals and fit the newly configured composition to the north wall of Memory Hall, where it remains today. The exhibition, which opens Tuesday, Dec. 15, explores the vast fragments left behind by MacMorris – the majority having never been seen in public in their current form and not in any format since the Panthéon's last showing in its entirety in 1940. You can read more about it on the National WWI Museum events webpage.

Saturday, Dec. 26- Annual Truce Tournament
Sporting Club, The Soccer Lot and the National WWI Museum and Memorial invite the Kansas City regional soccer community to take part in the third annual Truce Tournament commemorating the Christmas Truce in World War I. This 3v3 tournament will be played on Memorial Hill with the Kansas City skyline providing an unmistakable backdrop on Saturday, Dec. 26. For more information, visit thetrucekc.com.

Wreaths Across America
On Saturday, December 12, Wreaths Across America will place wreaths at the Vietnam, Korea, and WWII Memorials. They will also place a wreath at Pershing Park for WWI. The ceremony will be at the Pershing statue in Pershing Park at 10am - we invite everyone to join us!

The app, BlackTimeMap, will combine virtual and augmented reality technology with community participation to create an immersive, interactive and educational experience that preserves African American history in WWI. It will allow smartphone, tablet and Google cardboard users to visit African American war memorial sites in 360° from anywhere in the world. Audiences will be able to access historical photos, film and audio as well as pin their own images, stories and documents to a virtual “wall” at the memorial sites. State Commemorative Body Status Map - 18 Nov 15

If you’ve been keeping track, you’ll notice our map of state centennial commemorative bodies (above) is much greener than it was a month ago - which is a very good thing! Currently, we have 17 states with commemorative bodies and 12 in which establishment is imminent.

Maryland
We have exciting news from Maryland! On Veterans Day, Gov. Hogan officially signed the Maryland WW1 Centennial Commission into existence. A special shout out to our Maryland volunteers for all the hard work they put in to accomplish this and to everyone in the Maryland government who made this happen.

California
After a lot of very hard work, our volunteers in California are finally seeing some forward movement in regards to establishing an official Californian WW1 commemorative body. Stay tuned for more information on that in the future, and - to our volunteers in California - keep up the good work!

Veterans Day

Countdown to Veterans Day Campaign
This year’s Countdown to Veterans Day Campaign wrapped up last week. It was a widespread success with people and organizations across the country taking a ‘day on’ to support our veterans. More than 60 veteran service organizations participated and our social media campaign garnered over 36 million impressions. We here at the Commission are glad to have played our small part in all of this and look forward to making next year an even bigger success! Read more about this year's campaign here.

Rebekah Wilson and the WW1 Memorial for the District of Columbia
This past Veterans Day, like on every other Veterans Day and Memorial Day, our Director of Operations, Rebekah Wilson, organized and lead a group of volunteers in decoration the District of Columbia’s WW1 memorial. This year, Full Measure - a nationally-aired, investigative broadcast program - ran a piece on it, which included an interview with Rebekah. Here's a link to the story for those interested.

In addition to his Over the Top magazine, Mike Hanlon also runs a monthly internet report on WWI called the Trip Wire. This month, the Trip Wire will focus on the recent Veterans Day celebrations, including stories of volunteerism from around the US. If you volunteered, or knew someone who volunteered this past Veteran's Day, please email Mike so that he can add you to the Trip Wire!

The National WWI Memorial at Pershing Park- Updates

Virginia
The VA WWI Centennial Committee met Monday at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond. It is in the process of finalizing their 501 c 3 status. The Committee has formed subcommittees on Education, Programming and Fundraising, and already has representation from across the entire state.
One of their main initiatives is to restore the Carillon, Virginia’s WWI Memorial in Byrd Park. If you are in the Richmond area on Veterans Day, there will be a concert on the Carillon bells by Carillonneur Larry Robinson, and will continue with patriotic music by The Bellini Sisters, recognition of The Memorial Rifles, and a presentation titled “The Last Mission of World War II” by Dr. Dean Decker. The program is free and open to the public.
