#CountdownToVeteransDay

Last week, we launched our #CountDownToVeteransDay campaign - and it has really taken off! In the first for days of the campaign, we have made over 1.5 million ‘touches’ among our audience! Join the campaign and help us top that number this week and next week. Head onto our Facebook page and twitter page and repost and retweet our posts and tweets. Use the handle #CountDownToVeteransDay with your own posts, too.

This is big! One day isn’t enough to honor our veterans. We’re glad people agree. We encourage everyone to look at Veterans Day not as a ‘day off’ but as a ‘day on’ to volunteer for a Veterans’ organization and to help the community. Remember #CountDownToVeteransDay

We encourage everyone to follow us on Facebook and Twitter and to invite their friends to do the same.

AASLH

Last week the American Association of State and Local History held their annual conference with participants across the country. AASLH Deputy Director, Bob Beatty, hosted a panel on WWI consisting of Commissioners Dr. Libby O’Connell and Dr. Matt Naylor, Dr. Christine Pittsley from the CT State Library and CT State WWI Committee and Bob Beatty. The room was packed with only standing space left available. Collectively, the panelist addressed the why, what, and how of centennial commemoration. Conference attendees also provided excellent feedback on how the commission can better serve state and local historians who are looking at commemorating the centennial of WWI.

Thank you Bob for having us and thank you to the panelists for being there and spreading the word about commemorating WWI.

State Outreach Collaboration Call
WW1 Memorial to be restored in LAThe National State Outreach Team holds a State Outreach Collaboration Call at noon Eastern time. Volunteers and commemorative bodies across the country dial in and talk about what is working in their respective states. It gives everyone an opportunity to network and to partner up.
Volunteer for state outreach. Contact Andrew McGreal if you are willing to help.

California
Volunteer Courtland Jindra has successfully lobbied the Los Angeles city council to restore a WW1 (and later WW2) memorial in grave disrepair. The memorial, on a traffic island in the the southwest corner of Adams and La Brea, was badly discolored, cracked, and defaced by years of graffiti. After months of agitation, the local American Legion chapter volunteered to pay for a repair assessment, and the City Council picked up the tab for restoration. A re-unveiling ceremony is planned to take place on Memorial Day 2016. Congratulation Courtland - this is a big win for WW1 commemoration!

Maryland
Last Saturday our great volunteers for Maryland put together a meeting of constituents for the Maryland WWI Network. The meeting was well attended, with over 20 people. Some of the organizations/agencies represented were: Governor Hogan's office, Department of Planning, Fort Meade, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland Veteran's Museum, Maryland Humanities Council, Jewish Museum of Maryland, Western Front Association, American Red Cross, Boy Scouts, Saving Hallowed Ground, Commission on African American History and Culture, and of course the entire MD WW1 Centennial Committee Volunteer team (Eric Marr, Chris Leins, and Nancy Schaff).

Hawaii
Tomorrow is the kickoff meeting for the Hawaii WW1 Task Force. The meeting will be hosted by the State Office of Veterans Services and will feature a host of speakers including representatives from the VFW, the Friends of the Natatorium, the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce, the Hawaii DOD, and the American Legion, among others. The organizers aim to hammer out the Task Force’s goals, structure, composition and steps for the future. Congratulations Hawaii on coming so far so quickly!

Upper Midwest Regional Meeting Recap
Last we held the Upper Midwest Regional Meeting - we had approximately 30 participants from all walks of life in IL, WI, IN, MN - and others that were listening in online. We started an excellent conversation on what can be done in the Upper Midwest and how the commission can better serve stakeholders. We are taking that feedback and re-approaching our state outreach efforts not just to the Upper Midwest to all our stakeholders. Stay tuned for upcoming developments as we retool our outreach efforts to better serve state commissions, our volunteers, and organizations who are looking at commemorating the centennial of WW1.

#CountdownToVeteransDay

The Commission has launched a new social media outreach initiative called #CountdownToVeteransDay.

One day isn’t enough to honor our veterans - so we’ve started this hashtag to honor our veterans for the next 50 days. We are in contact with numerous veterans’ organizations and we will work together to spread awareness about veteran’s services and organizations as well as WW1 veterans and their sacrifice.

Our social media team has developed more than 150 tweets and social media posts; from now until Veterans Day, we will be posting a few tweets per day. With all retweets and reposts, we expect to reach an audience of over half a million over the course of our countdown to Veterans Day - which will include the Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington Cemetery.

In addition, we encourage everyone to look at Veterans Day not only as a ‘day off’ but also as a ‘day on’ for the community. Now and through Veterans Day, organizations can look at the hashtag and at least repost it to spread the good word. These organizations do not have to create new content - spreading the word is just as helpful. Individuals can do the same thing as well.

We encourage everyone to follow us on Facebook and Twitter and to invite their friends to do the same.

Hill Update

Commission staff members continue to meet with members and staff on Capitol Hill to generate awareness about the Commission and to ask for support.

Commissioner O’Connell’s Hill Briefing
We had a very enthusiastic response to Dr. O’Connell’s Capitol Hill briefing earlier this month. Her presentation tracked the causes of unrest as a result of the treaty that ended WWI and effects that we are still seeing across the world today, from the Middle East to China. Because it was so well attended, we are working with Congressman Yoder’s staff to schedule another one sometime in mid-October.

Volunteer Congressional Outreach
Your efforts at home are helping! Thank you to everyone who is reaching out to your Senators and Congressmen and women- it is most certainly raising awareness about WWI and putting the Commission on Members’ radars.
A notable success in this regard comes from Indiana. Ms. Lana Johnston in wrote to Indiana Senator Dan Coats asking for support in commemorating the centennial of WWI. Senator Coats wrote a letter back pledging his support for commemoration, whether it be efforts related to the National World War I Museum and Memorial or efforts establish a WW1 memorial at Pershing Park in Washington, D.C. Very exciting news indeed!

LA Pershing Park Design Competition

The campaign to revitalize World War One memorials has truly become a national, coast-to-coast effort. Work on the redesigned park in downtown LA is expected to be completed by 2020, and will be a major factor in the ongoing revitalization of downtown Los Angeles. Learn more about this international design competition here. We will hear from Courtland Jindra, one of outstanding volunteers, next week on how he was a big part of getting this going. Centennial Countdown to the Great War - New Blog Entry

Dennis Cross, one of our fantastic Kansas state outreach volunteers, publishes a monthly blog called Centennial Countdown to the Great War. As the name suggests, this blog covers events that took place a hundred years ago this month. This month’s entry covers the continuing Allied slog at Gallipoli as well as events taking place in the US and Latin America. You can read the full blog here.

Upcoming Events at the WW1 Museum

The National WW1 Museum continues its monthly “In the Know” series at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20 when Kip Lindberg, Director of the U.S. Army Chemical Corps Museum, discusses the development of chemical warfare in history. In particular, Lindberg will focus on chemical warfare in WWI, its development and the use of poison gas near the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Loos, when the British deployed gas warfare for the first time.

Additionally, Living History volunteers will bring history to life by discussing trench warfare on Sunday, Sept. 13 as they present accounts and artifacts from World War I.

American Legion Convention

Our Director of Communications, Chris Isleib, has been at our booth at the American Legion Convention all week. We’ve made great connections with Legionnaires all across the country and we feel that it has been a great success. General Pershing was on hand at the booth today, taking “Pershing Selfies” with participants. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for snapshots of that! Chairman Rob Dalessandro will speak to the Convention tomorrow.

Operation Doorknock: Volunteer Follow-up

As you know, teams from the WW1CC met with over 30 members of the House and Senate during July and informational packets were dropped off at each member's offices. We conducted that outreach in an effort to raise awareness about the commemorative and educational activities the Commission will be conducting as we prepare for the 100th anniversary of the US entering the Great War, as well as to update them on the design competition for the national memorial site. We received very warm welcomes and almost all of the officials pledged to help the Commission.

During August members of Congress will return to their states and districts - this is a critical time for them to hear from you, their constituents, about your support of the WW1CC. We need you to use the following resources so you can contact your Representative and Senators.

Go to www.house.gov and www.senate.gov to get the contact information for your Senators' and members of Congress's local offices in your state.

Call or e-mail those offices and ask them to become active supporters of the World War One Centennial Commission. Use these Talking Points when you contact your Congressperson and fill out and send to us this Form afterwards. You can be incredibly helpful to the Commission by just spending 15 minutes of your time on a few e-mails and phone calls!

Design Competition Update

As you all know, Phase 1 of our Design Competition ended a few weeks ago. The moment you’ve all been waiting for is here-
We have officially revealed the five finalist design concepts!

Check them out here! Please remember that these are concepts and will evolve over the course of this project.

The Commission would like to thank each and every Stage I participant. They provided us with over 350 works of art, and each design concept that was submitted is a meaningful and enduring tribute to the veterans of WW1. All Stage I submissions will remain available on the Design Competition Website as a part of the permanent record of the World War 1 Centennial Commission.

Stage I of the design competition was the first step in a long development process that includes many different reviews, designed to bring forward the best possible plan for all parties. These include environmental, cultural, historical, engineering, budgetary, and livability reviews. We have been partnering closely with the stakeholder organizations to listen to as many voices as possible, and to bring forward the best possible plan. Those stakeholder partners include the National Park Service, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, the National Capital Planning Commission, and the Pershing family, among others. History has shown us that the best memorial projects are those that listen to as many voices as possible.

In Stage II, the Participants will evolve their design concepts for the memorial and present their designs while fulfilling the needs requirements set out by our Commission and by our stakeholder partners. The next stage of development promises to be a challenging one for each team. We plan to make these developed design concepts public, and to invite the public to comment on them, as well.

We hope to announce the final design concept selection of this competition early next year.

Please remember that even if we get the perfect design we can’t build it without donations. We encourage everyone on this call to consider donating. Every dollar counts double thanks to the generosity of our founding sponsor, the Pritzker Military Museum and Library, which will match your donation. We will include a link in the minutes. You can make this memorial a reality by making a donation to the Memorial Fund. Share this link on social media and on your organization's website--however you can get the word out. We cannot do this without your support. Thank you!

Update from the States

North Carolina
The North Carolina Dept. of Transportation with support of the Garden Club of NC has created a proposal to the NC WWI Centennial Committee to plant poppies in honor of the commemoration along North Carolina roadsides. They are happy to share their plan with other states- list of seed sources, best materials, best practices, etc. Encourage your state to consider this- we can put you in touch with the folks in North Carolina that prepared the plan. Additionally, you can check out the plan here.

Ohio
The Ohio Historical Center is making a state-wide call for war memorabilia from Ohio service men and women. The center is asking citizens to donate any items related to your or a family member's military service, such as mementos that carry personal significance, photographs, letters, objects used during service, etc. It does not have to be WW1. By donating your items, you can ensure that they will be known to future generation and not lost to time.

Kansas
The initial meeting of the Kansas WW 1 Centennial Commemoration Committee will take place at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 14, 2015 in the Kansas Museum of History, 6425 SW Sixth Avenue Topeka, KS. One of our early Kansas state outreach volunteer, James Patton will be in attendance, as will Commissioner Jim Whitfield. This meeting is a direct result of Chairman Dalessandro's letter to Governor Brownback- so we are excited about that. Stay tuned for more from Kansas!

Hawaii
Hawaii is in the process of setting up its very own commission, thanks in no small part to the efforts of our volunteer and Hawaii Committee Liaison Col. Arthur Tulak (Ret.). The Committee is forming with participation from the State Government, the Academic community, and Veterans organizations. Its kick-off meeting is tentatively set for September. It will initially focus on developing a Hawaii WWI timeline and a dedicated website to share that timeline. Congrats to everyone in Hawaii for making such quick progress! Announcement from Dr. Ed Furgol
The Naval History and Heritage Command is exploring new ideas to peak public interest in the commemoration of the centennial. A few of these ideas are a Naval "dining in", a cocktail program, viewings of a list of films put together by Dr. Furgol and his interns, paper dolls or coloring pages of the various naval uniforms for the War, period specific dances, and musical programs. Though they feel it is ambitious, Dr. Furgol and his team hope to have a play about women in the navy, Admiral Sims, and the introduction of convoys as well as a puppet pals show on Navy Ace David Ingalls.

An artistic volunteer could help Dr. Furgol by assisting in the creation of the paper dolls and coloring pages. To be put in touch with Dr. Furgol, please contact Andrew McGreal.

Operation Ink at the National World War 1 Museum
The National WWI Museum will host an event called Operation Ink tomorrow night. The event explores the evolution of tattoos in the 20th century and features the Tattoo Historian, Anna Friedman, and a photo gallery of tattoos collected in Kansas City. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a food/cocktail hour followed by the program at 6:30 p.m. Seating is limited, but tickets are still available at the National WWI Museum website.

While the end of July 1915 marked the end of the first year of the war, the end of the war itself was nowhere in sight. The battles were more deadly and the fighting was more vicious than ever. Read the blog here.

We hope to change “under consideration” to "it's happening". So, if you haven’t done so already and would like to send a letter, please contact Andrew McGreal for a letter template.

New Commissioner Sworn In
We announced last week that we would be getting a new commissioner-- and as of last Friday, Dr. Naylor, CEO of the National World War 1 Museum has been officially sworn in. We’re glad to have him aboard!

Packard Dave
Our good friend Dave Lockard and his WW1 Packard truck will be making an appearance in a special display at the Carlisle Event Truck Nationals from August 7 to August 9 in Carlisle, PA. If you’re interested and in the area, consider visiting Dave and his truck there!

Operation Doorknock: Volunteer Follow-up
Last week, we successfully carried out Operation Door Knock. Our interns hand delivered letters to every single member of congress. This was no easy feat. We kicked off a week on the Hill with a press conference with re-enactor volunteers and interns dressed as doughboys. This was followed by 34 meetings up on the hill with various members of the house and senate, to include Speaker John Boehner and Senator John McCain, Senator Harry Reid, many more. We feel we had some positive meetings and hope that it is bringing us closer to getting funding. Overall enthusiastic response to our efforts.

Listen up volunteers - Operation Doorknock is not finished! We are going to ask you to meet with your local congressmen while they are summer recess in the coming weeks. We will roll out this plan next. We need everyone working on this if we hope to get our point across. By creating support in their districts, the Congressmen and women will feel more compelled to act on our behalf. Stay tuned- we will have details to share next week.

Design Competition Update: The Jury Deliberates
Last week, Phase 1 of the Design Competition ended. We have received over 350 submissions, and the jury is deliberating as we speak! They will take that number and reduce it to 5 or less finalists. We will announce the finalist next month. Until then, you can see all of the submissions on the First Round Submission page of our website.

Please remember that even if we get the perfect design we can’t build it without donations. We encourage everyone on this call to consider donating. Every dollar counts double thanks to the generosity of our founding sponsor, the Pritzker Military Museum and Library, which will match your donation. We will include a link in the minutes. Our Great War men and women deserve a memorial. We can build it.

You can make this memorial a reality by making a donation to the Memorial FundShare this link on social media and on your organization's website--however you can get the word out. We cannot do this without your support. Thank you.

News and Announcements:

New Commissioner
We regret to inform you that Commissioner Dr. Mary Davidson-Cohen has stepped down from the Commission. Luckily, she has agreed to remain on the Foundation Board. Her service to us has been tremendous and will continue to be as she works with the Foundation. With her stepping down, a space opened up on the Commission board. Yesterday, that space was filled.

The National WWI Museum has appointed Dr. Matt Naylor, CEO, as the newest member of the Commission. Let's all extend a warm welcome to Dr. Naylor! We look forward to working with him and building our already strong relationship with the National WWI Museum.

IMLS Blog Post
Libraries and Museums are an important part of the roll of education America on this centennial. No one knows this better than the Connecticut State Library who has not only spent a tremendous amount of time on their own exhibits - but has also put together a grassroots effort to create a CT state committee. Their work on these topics is highlighted on the Institute for Museum and Library Science Website. Check it out!

Operation Door Knock
Operation Door Knock is happening right now on Capitol Hill. After the interns provided a packet to every member of the House and the Senate, we set up meetings with over 25 Representatives and Senators that started yesterday and will continue through Thursday. We also held a press conference and media event on the grounds of the Capitol Building to kick off General McCaffrey’s, Commissioner Fountain’s, and Commissioner Moe’s visits to the Hill. We feel the meetings are going promisingly - and we hope this will get us on our way of getting more awareness and support from Congress.

Listen up volunteers - Operation Doorknock is not going to end when these meetings end. We are going to be asking you to meet with your local congressmen and congresswomen while they are summer recess in August. More details will be forthcoming before too long. We need everyone's help if we hope to get our point across.

Also, check out some early press coverage!

July 15 Commission Meeting
Last week, the quarterly meeting of the WW1 Centennial Commission took place at the National WWI Museum in Kansas City. Our Commissioners covered a large swath of activity reports, reviewed reports from ex-officio members, voted on a several requests for support, and worked on several initiatives including strengthening our educational planning. It was great meeting. If you had something up for a vote, please be patient - our staff has been bogged down and will get to you soon enough, we promise.

Thank you to the Museum for hosting us and for letting us get a sneak peak of A Centenary of Australian War that wasn’t scheduled to open for a few more days.
