Honor & Remember Sergeant Alexander Louis Arch
The Schuyler Colfax Chapter, NSDAR hosted a memorial service honoring Hoosier World War I hero Sgt. Alexander L. Arch on October 23, 2017, in Osceola, Indiana.
The Hungarian immigrant from South Bend, Indiana, Alexander Louis Arch became an American hero overnight by following orders from his commander to pull and release the lanyard which fired the first American against the Germans on October 23, 1917. Alexander Arch kept the shell casing from that eventful day and his grandson has kept it safe after his death. It was on display along with his Silver Star and other medals during the Memorial Service on October 23, 2017.
To Honor & Remember Sergeant Alex L. Arch, before the service began, the surviving three daughters and the deceased son's granddaughter lit candles. The JROTC Cadets posted the colors, Father Bauman gave the invocation, there was a welcome from the regent and greetings from the distinguished guests. The keynote speakers spoke about Sgt. Arch and WWI in general. The Military Rites Chaplains presented the oldest daughter of Sgt. Arch with a folded American flag. The JORTC presented the five branches of the U.S. Military wreaths and honored guests presented wreaths as well.
The Military Rites Team gave a 21-gun salute and played taps. Afterward, everyone was invited to an appetizer reception in the Chapel of the funeral home.
