About The Event

Gonzaga University's Foley Center Library is the site of the unique exhibition, " 'America, Here's My Boy: Gender in American Popular Music in World War I." The exhibit is an examination of patriotic sheet music that arose when the United States entered World War I in 1917, and both encouraged men to enlist as well as encouraging women to give up their sons, husbands and brothers to the country to beat the Germans. The exhibit features 30 pieces of period sheet music as well as other artifacts housed in the Foley Center archives.

The curator of the exhibit is Margaret Thompson-Johnston, a senior history major at Gonzaga. Curating this exhibit fulfilled her her senior thesis in U.S. history.

The exhibit is housed in the Cowles Rare Books Reading Room on the third floor of the Foley Center, and is free to the public.
