Britain, the USA, and Indiana: the Great War in Song

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I, Butler University’s Global and Historical Studies program presented “Britain, the USA, and Indiana: Tthe Great War in Song: Popular and Art Songs From and About World War I," on Wednesday, February 22, at 7:00 PM in the Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall.

Admission to this program was free and open to the public without tickets.

In this concert-lecture, singer Andrea Axelrod, accompanied by John M. Cook on piano and Jenny Snedeker ’18 on piccolo, explored the disconnect between the frontline experience and propaganda on the home front through WW1-era songs and verse.

Axelrod, a New York-based writer, historical researcher, and singer, included several songs with Indiana roots in this illustrated performance. The set list included “Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag,” “In Flanders Field,” and rarities by Indiana-born composers. One of those titles: “When the Kaiser Does the Goose Step to a Good Old American Rag.”

The concert was paired with an exhibit in Irwin Library about Indiana in World War I, made up partly of a travelling display from the Indiana Historical Society, and partly of materials found in Butler’s own collections. This exhibit opened on February 14, and a public reception featuring Axelrod was held on February 21 from 3:30-5:30 PM.

The 100th anniversary of America’s entry into the war is April 6.
