VFW Post 895 is named after Army Pvt. Frank Bauwens, who was killed in action near Soissons, France, on July 17, 1918.
A memorial erected in the interwar period (the memorial refers to the conflict as "The World War") in front of Brownstown Elementary school. It lists everyone male and female from the township who served in the war and mentions those who served overseas as well as the two people killed and the three wounded in the course of the conflict. The monument is currently at risk because teachers at the elementary school want the monument removed because they view its presence outside a school as inappropriate and promoting violence.
