This plaque memorialized the first Evansville soldier to die during the war, Douglas Viele, who died of disease in June of 1917 at Fort Benjamin Harrison.  A memorial tree was planted above the plaque which is now barely visible under the tree's roots.  The tree and plaque are located on the grounds of the Rathbone Memorial Home.
