Poppy Field

This project will create one poppy for every WWI veteran with Miami county ties. They are to be placed in the Courthouse lawn around the Doughboy statue between November 1 and November 10.

Families are invited to place a poppy in honor of their soldier and so remember them with us on November 10. 

As part of our poppy making activities, we include a PowerPoint presentation that is adapted to the groups we are addressing, introducing the Great War as "the war that changed the world," putting faces to the soldiers and teaching the story behind the Poppy as a symbol of WWI.

Because all our WWI veterans have passed away we chose to honor all of them, considering that the survivors had to navigate some very rough waters after coming home.  We will make the list of names available to the public on our webpage and in our Facebook group so the public can see if they have a veteran to claim. So far 8 veterans have been claimed.

We hope the lawn covered in poppies will bring the community together in a similar way that WWI did 100 years ago.

We hope the kids and everyone who participate will remember being a part of something bigger than themselves.

Those who claim their veterans will be able to place the poppy in the lawn themselves if they choose and take their poppy home after the event.  A dozen of the remaining poppies will be presented as Thank You gifts to each of the groups who helped produce them and with the help of the Red Cross, we hope to get some to VA hospitals/homes throughout Indiana.

Our final veterans' list will be given to the Veterans' Affairs officer and to the cemeteries for future reference.  It will also be made available online on our web page.
